Cambridge City Council have awarded SWARCO who have partnered with Electric Blue the contract to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points across Cambridge for its Ultra Low Emission Vehicle Taxi project, which aims to increase the number of EV taxis used in the historic city.
The project directly addresses the level of poor air quality in the city. Electric Blue, in partnership with Office for Low Emission Vehicles, supplied the funding and provide operational support for 19 rapid and 3 fast chargers to be be installed in key locations in Cambridge City Centre.
Phase one for the project is already underway, with four chargers that are operational - two are sited in the Adam and Eve Car Park and two in Arbury Court. A further four Rapid Chargers will be installed across two other sites, Castle Hill, and an on-street location in Newmarket Road,
The Rapid Chargers are capable of providing 80 per cent charge to an EV Taxi in 30 minutes.
Electric Blue’s CEO Alex Calnan says “We are pleased to be able to support Cambridge City Council in providing their EV charging facilities and look forward to playing a significant role in helping their taxi drivers drive down air pollution in their community by converting to zero emission electric vehicles.”
Justin Meyer, General Manager of eVolt UK, says eVolt is proud to support the project: “We are committed to help Councils lower emissions, improve local air quality and provide reliable charging infrastructure where it is most needed. We anticipate that these units will help promote the use of EV taxis in Cambridge and encourage more drivers to make the switch.”
Cambridge was one of 10 councils in the UK to be awarded funding by OLEV in its competition for EV Taxi Infrastructure. The project aims to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions across the UK and provide cleaner air for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
